BIO

Garrett Simon is a PhD student in Natural Resources at the Rubenstein School of Environment and Natural Resources and a Gund Institute graduate fellow. He studies under the mentorship of Gillian Galford.

Garrett's possesses a broad academic background, spanning atomic physics, quantum computing, and nuclear engineering. Following the completion of his master's degree, he served six years in the U.S. Army as an active duty Cyber Operations officer stationed in Fort Gordon (Augusta), Georgia. He specialized in data engineering for cybersecurity data platforms and cyber threat detection analytics.

At UVM, Garrett hopes to transfer his background in programming, data science, and modeling to the world of forestry and land-use management, with a specific focus on maple sugarbush management and geospatial forest analysis. He's interested in the distilling insights from geospatial big data in platforms like ArcGIS and Earth Engine into actionable recommendations for state and county-level policymakers.
